Scott Mantua won his second straight Maryland State Championship on Saturday at Cole Field House at the University of Maryland. Mantua won the extremely competitive 112 lbs. weight class by defeating state runner-up Chad Strube (Middletown) and the previously unbeaten Lex Ozias (Southern-Garrett) on his way to the crown. Cameron Kirby (103) and Nathan White (130) also had stellar weekends, both finishing as state finalist. Nathan is on pace to be a four-time state-placer, a feat that has never been accomplished by a River Hill wrestler. Cameron becomes the highest finishing freshman in school history. Congradulations to all the River Hill wrestlers on a great season!03.08.08
The Hawks are currently in 6th place after the first day of the State Championships. All five wrestlers won their first round match and advanced to the second day. Cameron Kirby (103), Scott Mantua (112), and Nathan White (130) are all in the semi-final round while Evan Shebel (125) and Sean Kirby (135) lost their quarter-final bouts and have dropped into the Consolation bracket.

River Hill qualified 5 wrestlers for the State Championships held next weekend at Cole Field House. Cameron Kirby (103) and Scott Mantua (112) both captured their first Regional titles. Evan Shebel (125) and Nathan White (130) took third and Sean Kirby (135) finished fourth. The Hawks placed 9 out of 10 in the top 6 of the tournament finishing in 4th place. Way to go Hawks!

River Hill put 5 wrestlers in the semi-final in last nights 1a2a South Regional Tournament. Sean Kirby (135) led the charge with a 4-2 overtime upset of the #2 seed. Cameron Kirby (103) and Scott Mantua (112) both earned falls while Nathan White (130) and Evan Shebel (125) earned a technical fall and decision to advance. Jose Griffin-Benitez (140), Garrett Walsh (152), Brendan Fennessy (160), Scott Trench (171), and Eric Kohr (215) all sufferer losses yesterday, but are still alive in the consolation bracket. Wrestling resumes at 10:30 am at Oakland Mills High School. Good luck Hawks!

River Hill had 10 wrestlers qualify for the 1a2a South Regional Championships which will be held at Oakland Mills High School this Friday and Saturday. Nathan White and Scott Mantua earned the top seed while Cameron Kirby received the second seed. Evan Shebel, Sean Kirby, Jose Griffin-Benitez, Garrett Walsh, Brendan Fennessy, Scott Trench, and Eric Kohr also will compete this weekend. Check out the top 8 seeds here. Scott Mantua won his second Howard County title and Nathan White won his first as the Hawks had seven place-winners yesterday at the Howard County Championships. Along with Mantua and White, Cameron Kirby (103), Sean Kirb (135), and Scott Trench (171) will automatically advance to next weekends Regional Championships based on their 3rd place finishes. Also placing for the Hawks was Garrett Walsh (152) and Brendan Fennessy (160), fifth and seventh respectively. Eric Kohr will wrestle for fifth place tomorrow afternoon at 4 pm. River Hill ended its season last night with a 42-25 victory over Howard in the Hawks final dual meet of the season. The Hawks finish 8-6 on the year and 18-12 overall. It is the most dual meet wins all-time by a River Hill team. Good luck to all River Hill wrestlers in the post season!

River Hill beat Paint Branch 55-21 last night in a non-conference Dual Meet. The Hawks jumped out to a 37-0 lead thanks to pins by Eric Kohr, Connor Walsh, Evan Shebel, Nathan White, and Sean Kirby. River Hill will wrestle at Howard on Friday for its final match of the regular season.

River Hill won 65-9 over Wilde Lake and 30-28 over Hammond in last nights Howard County intra-league match. The Hawks were lead by Cameron Kirby, Jake Pace, and Eric Kohr all going 2-0 on the night and reaching 20 wins for the season. Sean Kirby returned to the Varsity line-up after being out for 3 weeks with an injury and earned a key Major Decision to lift the Hawks past the Golden Bears. River Hill will take the mat tomorrow night in a double dual against Reservoir (4 pm) followed by defending 3a4a East Champion Severna Park (6 pm).

In the November 15th edition of WrestlingUSA Magazine both Scott Mantua (103) and Nathan White (119) were ranked Honorable Mention for the Junior class. The was the first national ranking for Mantua, who won the state title at 103 lbs., and White, who was a runner-up at 119 lbs. Way to go Scott and Nathan!

Two dual meet tournaments and three strong out-of-county teams highlight the 2007-2008 River Hill Wrestling schedule announced Wednesday by Head Coach Brandon Lauer. The Hawks will travel to Virginia and compete in one of the toughest Dual Meet Tournaments in the nation - the Battlefield Duals. The Hawks will also wrestle two stalwart out-of county competitors, Severna Park and Paint Branch; both placed in the top ten of last years 3a4a State Championships. Click here to view the schedule.

The TEAM Penguin Wrestling Club is getting ready to start its fall season. Practices will be on Tuesday's and Thursday's from 7-8 for wrestlers in grades K-8 and 8-9 for wrestlers in high school. Scott Mantua became River Hill's fourth individual All-American over the weekend by placing 6th at the FILA Cadet National Championships at the University of Akron in Ohio. Scott beat competitors from Pennsylvania, Virginia, Florida, and Arizona on his way to his first All-American title. Way to go Scott!

Freestyle/Greco Roman Season will be kicked off on Tuesday, April 10th at TEAM Penguin practice. We will hold a small rules clinic the first half hour of the second session to review the new rule changes. These two styles will be the primary focus for the club over the next three months.

Four River Hill wrestlers get set for the National High School Coaches Association National Championships in Virginia Beach, VA. Scott Mantua, Nathan White, and Sean Kirby will be competing in the Sophomore Nationals while A.J. Nord will be competing in the Freshman Nationals.

Scott Mantua became the schools third individual to win a state championship. Scott finished the season 36-1 and defeated World Champion Nicole Woody in the finals 6-2. Nathan White (119, 31-6) finished an outstanding second-place earning his first state finals appearance and his second state medal (5th in 2006). Jake Pace also won a match which lifted the Hawks to its fifth top ten finish in school history. Congratulations Scott, Nathan, and the rest of the River Hill Wrestling Team on a great season!

River Hill finished 5th place at the Howard County Championships yesterday led by its only Champion, Scott Mantua (103, 29-0). Nathan White (119, 25-5), Saud Mohammed (135, 23-9), Keith Jaworski (145, 15-9), David Buescher (152, 20-10), and Brandon Barnes (13-11) all earned an automatic bids to the Regional Championship by placing third overall. The Hawks next competition is the Regional Championships at Chesapeake High School on February 23rd and 24th.

Calvert Hall downed River Hill on Saturday, 39-27. The Cardinals won two toss up matches at 145 and 152 to defeat the Hawks in the schools first meeting. Scott Mantua won the match of the night with a 1-0 victory over rival Bill Gialamis. Mantua finishes the regular season undefeated, 26-0, only the fifth Hawks to do so in school history.

A reversal and two near-fall points by freshman Brandon Barnes (285) in the final eight seconds of the night's last match clinched a come-from-behind, 7-5 decision over senior Mitch Cowger, ending Hammond's 27-bout Howard County winning streak dating to a 33-31 loss at Atholton on Feb. 11, 2004 (from Lem Satterfield, Baltimore Sun).

John Carroll edged River Hill 169-168 at the 18th annual Edgewood Wrestling Tournament. The Hawks had three tournament champions; Scott Mantua (103, 22-0), Nathan White (119, 18-3), and Ryan Williams (130, 14-7) and one runner-up Saud Mohammed (135, 18-6). The Hawks had seven out of twelve wrestlers place and David Buescher recorded the tournaments fastest pin in :08 seconds. River Hill improved to 5-3 as it dominated host Centennial (3-5), 40-25. The Hawks got off to a fast start with three straight pins from Jake Pace (189), Jesse Yu (215), and Brandon Barnes (285). Scott Mantua continued his unbeaten streak improving to 17-0 with a 4-3 decision over Jack Western. The Hawks will next take the mats on January 12th when they face the Lightening of Long Reach. After splitting a tri-meet with Atholton and Wilde Lake, River Hill will travel down Rt. 108 for their 8th consecutive intra-county dual meet. The Hawks have had great success in the past against the Eagles, never losing to them in school history. Scott Mantua won his second tournament of the year and improved his record to 14-0 last night at the 28th annual Arundel Holiday Tournament. Mantua dominated the number one seed and two-time state qualifier Nicole Woody of Arundel 9-6. The Hawks finished a solid ninth out of eighteen teams and placed three other wrestlers; Nathan White - second, Sean Kirby - fourth, and Saud Mohammed - sixth. The next time the Hawks will take to the mats will be in 2007 when they will travel to Wilde Lake (Atholton) to wrestle in their second tri meet of the season.

The #6 Ranked Glenelg Gladiators showed why they may contend for a state title this year by dominating the Hawks 47-15. The Gladiators (7-0, 5-0) got key wins from Tim Chase (189) and David Brindza (130). River Hill (3-2) has looks to rebound at the Arundel Holiday Tournament on December 27th & 28th.

River Hill returns home to take on the No. 6 ranked Glenelg Gladiators. Glenelg (6-0, 4-0) has a very good team that has a lot of veteran experience blended with some talented youngsters. State placers Brian Marcoux, Danny Bichner, and Chris Stinnett led the Gladiators into the Hawks Nest at 4 pm (JV) and 5:30 pm (Var.) respectively.

The Hawks improved to 3-1 yesterday as they beat Reservoir, 48-28, and host Oakland Mills, 30-28. In the first match of the night against the Gators (2-2, 2-2), River Hill got a huge boost from heavyweight Brandon Barnes who pinned Sean Quinn in 3:19. In the final dual meet of the night, both teams exchanged wins and pins until the Hawks charged ahead by winning 5 matches in a row to take a 27-15 lead over the defenseless Scorpions (6-4, 1-3). Ryan Williams clinched the team victory with his 2-1 victory at 140 lbs. Way to go HAWKS!

River Hill won its first tournament of the year last night edging runner-up Mardela 238-235. The Hawks were led by champions Scott Mantua (103, 7-0), Nathan White (119, 6-1), and Saud Mohammed (130, 7-0). All River Hill wrestlers scored points for the team which earned the Hawks its first Kent County Holiday Tournament title and the schools first regular season title since 2002. The JV also competed this weekend placing 10 out of 22 wresters with two champions Evan Shebel (119) and Brendan Fennessy (160). The River Hill Wrestling Team heads East to compete in the Kent County Holiday Tournament this Friday and Saturday. The tournament features a host of Eastern shore teams that include: Bo Manor, Huntingtown, James M. Bennett, Kent, Kent Island, Mardela, Meade, Middletown(DE), and Queen Anne’s. River Hill got a huge boost from Sean Kirby (125) last night. Kirby avenged a loss from last season with a pin of Chris Dutt. Kirby dominated action and secured a fall in the third period to lift the HAWKS (1-1) over the visiting Lions (0-2), 40-27. The Lions are also seeking their first win after a heartbreaking loss to Atholton, 34-40. The match of the night could be county finalist Tyler Bulger and state placer Nathan White. The match cam down to the final bout where Chang (MR) pinned Nick Chilcoate with 4 seconds left in the second period. The Mustangs (1-0) next match is the Aberdeen Duals.
